ARK dev: PS4 Pro performance equal to $900 gaming PC

Studio Wildcard has been hard at work on ARK: Survival Evolved since it was released, with the game finally hitting the PS4 earlier this year after enjoying great success on the PC.

ARK dev: PS4 Pro performance equal to $900 gaming PC

Now the developer is talking about Sony's new 4K-ready (but mostly upscaled) PS4 Pro console, as well as possible PSVR support in the future. Before that, what type of experience are we getting on the PS4 with ARK? During a recent interview with WCCFTech, we now that the developer is aiming for: "30-45 FPS for the regular PS4 (which renders ARK's environment at either at 680p or 720p depending on whether you have "Detailed Graphics" selected)". As for the PS4 Pro: "60 FPS at 720p,or 30-60 FPS at 1080p, depending on "Detailed Graphics" setting".

The team was asked about their thoughts on the performance of the PS4 Pro, where Lead Programmer and co-founder of Studio Wildcard Jeremy Stieglitz replied: "Very impressed with its performance, at a very reasonable price. We estimate it would cost at least $900 to build a similarly powerful PC, and that's if you were custom-building it with extreme cost control. We estimate its raw GPU performance is similar to an NVIDIA 970, and along with CPU improvements and overall more memory, it's a really high benchmark for console performance. Hats off to Sony for "crossing the Rubicon" of console hardware updates (bonus that it tends to improve performance in just about every existing title in the PlayStation 4 library)!"

Crytek staff claim they haven't been paid in 3 months

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Dec 11, 2016 5:44 PM CST

Crytek have been through a few financial troubles over the years (that's what you get when you abandon PC gaming and want some of that console cash) and here we are again - Crytek developers are saying they haven't been paid in over 3 months. There were big issues in June 2014, which you can check out here.

Sources from Let's Play Video Games have said that Crytek employees haven't been paid in the last 3 months, with the studio informing their staff the issues would be resolved with a bank loan in Germany, where Crytek HQ is. This was meant to be done over a month ago, and it hasn't happened yet.

The payment delays are affecting all staff, ranging from entry-level through to management. Another alleged Crytek employee has taken to Reddit, saying they work at the German-based studio and haven't been paid in 6 months. The user said: "I'm not sure where else to turn at this point. This has happened in the past a few times, but never for this long. Management never gives anyone a heads up, and it isn't clear to me if they are getting paid or even informed from the owners".

It's 'War' in new 'Planet of the Apes' teaser trailer

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Dec 11, 2016 5:05 PM CST

Before Charlton Heston and that terrible Tim Burton reboot, 2011's 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' took the franchise right back to where it all begun, as the human race began it's downfall. Its 2014 follow-up 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' chronicled the war with humanity's survivors. Now, the third entry is set to continue bridging the gap.

Andy Serkis dons a motion capture suit once again to play Caesar , the ape leader who spearheaded the rebellion against the humans, while Woody Harrelson plays a new character called the Colonel, a ruthless army veteran who commands the last vestiges of the human armies.

'War for the Planet of the Apes' is set to hit screens worldwide from July 2017.

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 10, 2016 10:27 PM CST

Tired of mashing buttons in Final Fantasy XV? Pull off some awesome attack, but not sure exactly how you did it? Luckily we have your back: in this helpful how-to guide, we break down the anatomy of Final Fantasy XV's combat and teach you everything you need to know to pull off epic combos in every single battle.

Final Fantasy XV: How to master attacks and combos

For expediency, we won't cover every facet of FFXV's combat, including Link-Strikes, Breaks, Blindsides and all the other dynamics. We're just trying to teach gamers not to mindlessly button mash to beat their foes!

With Final Fantasy XV, Square Enix broke the mold and introduced a dynamic action-based combat system. The game's combat now feels more like Devil May Cry than a traditional turn-based Final Fantasy game, complete with combos, timed strikes, effects, and directional blows. In many ways the game takes on the scope of a fighter like Tekken, with reaction time and consistent understaning of combos and weapons being incredibly important throughout.

Faraday Future keeps teasing their upcoming electric car

Lana Jelic | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Dec 10, 2016 2:40 PM CST

Another day, another teaser from Faraday Future. This one reveals the most so far when it comes to the design, and as we previously reported, they aren't going for a conventional design.

The image also shows that the LiDAR sensor is placed in the middle of the hood. From what we saw so far, they are aiming for a futuristic look of the car.

The previous image revealed that Faraday Future decided to ditch the side view mirrors and instead install cameras. This is something that Tesla did with their Model X when they first unveiled it, and BMW with i8. However, those cars didn't go into production with cameras instead of mirrors because transportation laws and regulations didn't allow for it. Since then, Japan has approved this feature on their roads and many other countries are reportedly looking to do the same.

Qualcomm has announced that it has started commercial sampling of the world's first 48-core SoC on the 10nm node, with ARM-based Falkor 10nm CPU used in the upcoming chip family 'Centriq 2400'.

Senior VP and GM of Qualcomm Datacenter Technologies, Inc. Anand Chandrasekher, explains: "The Qualcomm Centriq 2400 series processors will drive high performance, power efficient ARM-based servers from concept to reality. Qualcomm requires the leading edge of integrated circuit technology to deliver high performance at low power for the newest premium smartphones. We are first in 10nm IC technology for mobile, and leveraging our expertise in ARM processors and system on chip design, we are the first with our Qualcomm Centriq family of server processors to bring the leading edge to the datacenter".

We have no idea about the technical and performance side of the processor, so we don't know how to compare it against current x86 offerings - but Qualcomm has beaten Intel to the 48-core/10nm CPU game in 2017.

Watch Shigeru Miyamoto play Mario's theme song on guitar

In this time of instant information, speculation, and constant flow of news, sometimes it's nice to take a little break and just have a little whimsical fun. Don't worry--we're not going to break away from our usual blast of Nintendo Switch news any time soon--but I thought I'd share something with you guys that really lightened up my day.

I caution to say that Mario's theme song is one of the most iconic jingles of all time. When it plays, everyone cracks a smile and is instantly transported back to those NES days of yore, the days where Mario's platforming exploits danced endlessly on our CRT TVs and Nintendo pretty much owned the gaming world.

Nintendo's Super Mario Run mobile game is online-only

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 9, 2016 11:24 AM CST

Nintendo has confirmed that its first-ever smartphone game, Super Mario Run, can't be played offline. Even the free demo mode requires an online connection.

Nintendo's Super Mario Run mobile game is online-only

Nintendo made huge waves with its first major mobile game starring its famous eponymous platforming plumber, with the company's stock surging 30% shortly after the game's reveal. Super Mario Run is expected to rake in serious revenue for Nintendo thanks to its purchase scheme--the game is free to play up to a certain point, and requires a purchase to continue onward--and attract tons of mobile users across the globe--in fact, the game is launching in some 150 countries around the world.

But there's just one small problem: Super Mario Run requires a persistent internet connection in order to play. Nintendo says that this was by design, and will not only make the game much more secure and thwart piracy, but allow the game's three different modes to constantly work in tandem with Nintendo's servers and allow easy updates.
