About TweakTown

TweakTown® is one of the world's leading technology publications, covering the latest in consumer tech, hardware reviews, industry analysis, and breaking news since 1999.

TweakTown is dedicated to my late grandfather, Val Grimm, who introduced me to computers in my early years and sparked my passion for technology.

The website was officially named and launched to the public on the 15th of September 1999. Originally, TweakTown was known as "Wilmot's Website" and served as my homepage (blog) with information about me and links to other websites. TweakTown has transformed into one of the world's biggest and most successful tech websites, being accessed by tens of thousands of readers every day.

We have been featured in many mainstream press magazines, newspapers, and many high-profile websites such as Digg, Gizmodo, Engadget, Slashdot, and Fark regularly, and even on television through CNN, The Screen Savers, and TechTV. Our content is syndicated to thousands of readers through our RSS feeds, as well as by Google News, Google Discover, and others.

How did it all start? I had a pretty good understanding of getting better performance out of 56k dial-up modems. So, I decided to publish a modem "tweaking" (fine-tuning or optimizing) guide for friends crawling along on slow 56k dial-up Internet connections. They needed that little extra speed boost in online games to improve their ping. In the way the Internet works best, the word quickly got around about how well the famous Modem Tweaking Guide improved performance, and Wilmot's Website eventually got bigger, at a rapid speed, to the point where it adapted into a fully functional tech website, with talented editors dotted all over the world.

My local ISP hosted Wilmot's Website at the time. They eventually kicked me off their server for exceeding bandwidth limits. At this stage, I had also released a couple more tweaking guides for my growing audience. This was when I thought about starting up an optimization page and getting rid of the personal stuff. On the 15th of September 1999, I suddenly came up with the idea of renaming Wilmot's Website to "TweakTown."

In 2004, sometime after TweakTown became a full-time job for me, a company named Tweak Town Pty Ltd was registered in Australia. Special thanks go out to the many people who helped in the early days - you know who you are. And most importantly, thank you to our loyal readers who continue to support us by coming back daily for your tech fix. You are the reason TweakTown exists and thrives.

Thanks for reading!

Mission Statement

TweakTown's mission is to provide quality, unbiased, trustworthy, honest, and useful content that helps readers stay informed and make better buying decisions. We achieve this through a high standard of editorial quality and by producing content based on extensive real-world testing, benchmarking, and hands-on experience.

Editorial & Ethics Policy

TweakTown and its editors pride ourselves in providing honest and accurate information. Products reviewed by our editors are tested and benchmarked extensively before a review is published, using defined test systems, repeatable methods where appropriate, and category-specific evaluation depending on the type of product - see TweakTown's How we Test page for further details. Our broader editorial content, including news, features, guides, and other reporting, is produced with the same commitment to accuracy, fairness, and scrutiny. Many of our editors have at least ten years of experience in the PC, tech, and gaming fields. Over that time, they have developed the skills and knowledge required to test accurately, report responsibly, and scrutinize the products, companies, and topics they cover.

TweakTown has not and will never accept any form of payment for favorable reviews, awards, articles, roundups, news coverage, or any sort of reporting. TweakTown does accept payment for sponsored content. All sponsored content is clearly marked in multiple places within the content itself, such as in the byline ("Sponsored Content"), and in the article with the text "Please Note: This is sponsored content and does not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of TweakTown or its editors. See our Editorial & Ethics Policy for more information." TweakTown's editorial and commercial operations are kept separate.

TweakTown is not and has never been influenced by any outside parties. Likewise, manufacturers, brands, PR agencies, sponsors, and TweakTown's senior editorial staff do not alter, shape, approve, or try to persuade our editors into an adjusted review, award decision, article, or report different from their own opinion. No outside party approves TweakTown's editorial content before publication. Editorial decisions on what products are reviewed or what topics are covered are made by TweakTown based on editorial value, reader interest, relevance, and availability, not simply on what products are supplied or pitched. Receiving a review sample does not guarantee coverage, a positive score, or an award.

Editors are expected to avoid material conflicts of interest wherever possible and to disclose them when relevant. TweakTown has a strong policy against plagiarism and has a three-strikes-and-you-are-out rule for all editors. In some cases, after publication, third parties may choose to license TweakTown editorial quotes or award badges for use in marketing or promotional materials through an authorized licensing partner. Any such licensing is strictly post-publication and has no influence on the review, score, award decision, or editorial outcome. When factual errors are identified, TweakTown will correct them as quickly and transparently as possible.

Transparency

TweakTown is wholly owned and operated by Tweak Town Pty Ltd (ABN 82 106 585 657 / ACN 106 585 657), an Australian-registered company. Tweak Town Pty Ltd is solely owned by Mr. Cameron Wilmot, who is also the founder of TweakTown and an Australian citizen and resident.

TweakTown and Tweak Town Pty Ltd are not and have never been influenced by any nation state, government, political party, political action committee (PAC), or similar entity.

TweakTown is proud to be an independent media outlet backed by a small company without outside influence. TweakTown's editors are paid solely by Tweak Town Pty Ltd for the content they produce and are usually allowed to keep the products sent to them for testing, free of charge. We may earn an affiliate commission when you click through to an online store where we list product prices.

Fact-Checking and Corrections Policy

Each TweakTown editor is responsible for fact-checking their own work before publication. This includes checking names, products, specifications, dates, sources, links, and any other relevant details to help ensure accuracy.

Many of our editors have at least ten years of experience in the PC, tech, and gaming fields. That experience helps them report accurately and identify mistakes, inconsistencies, or unsupported claims before publication. If a factual error is identified after publication, TweakTown will correct it as quickly and transparently as possible. Where appropriate, we will note what was changed and why.
