Introduction

CATALYST 9.1 PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

As January was quickly closing to an end we thought that the Catalyst driver team had forgotten about us! While we ultimately knew a driver was going to be coming, I can honestly say that I thought the lengthy wait was due to ATI wanting to get a nice performance boost out of the current crop of cards.

Looking over the release notes, though, you quickly find yourself disappointed with no promise of any performance updates. But with that said, there is now full OpenGL 3.0 support, not that it is going to be of any help to gamers at the moment, since OpenGL 3.0 isn't yet a standard used by game developers.

Also included in the driver update are a number of bug fixes in the Catalyst Control Center along with some other resolved issues under Vista and XP which can be seen in the release notes.

Using our newest testbed, we're going to be following the new formula we implemented into our Catalyst Performance Analysis last month. Most of our benchmarks now revolve around real world testing and since we're using higher end cards, we're now testing up to 2560 x 1600 in all our benchmarks.

While we haven't been promised of any performance increases, let's have a look to see if there are any surprises, or perhaps even a negative impact with the latest driver set as this isn't all that uncommon.

The game is a parallel story that follows Sergeant Michael "Psycho" Sykes, a character from the original Crysis, as he faces his own trials and challenges on the other side of the island during the time period of the first game.

It also showcases a new, enhanced and optimized version of CryEngine 2 using full DX10 extensions and is the first game developed by Crytek's Budapest studio.

Left 4 Dead uses the latest version of Valve's Source engine, with improvements such as multi-core processor support and physics-based animation to more realistically portray hair and clothing, and to improve physics interaction with enemies when shot or shoved in different body parts. Animation was also improved to allow characters to lean realistically when moving in curved paths.

Rendering and artificial intelligence were scaled up to allow for greater number of enemies who can navigate the world in better ways, such as climbing, jumping or breaking obstacles. Lighting has been enhanced with new self-shadowing normal mapping and advanced shadow rendering that is important to convey information about the environment and player actions.

Final Thoughts

Considering the long wait between driver releases, it's safe to say that as a new year present for us, this one is quite disappointing. While performance in Far Cry 2 is slightly up on all cards, for the most part we don't see anything special.

With no new card to combat the latest NVIDIA offerings we really thought that ATI would make the effort to increase performance on their popular HD 4800 series. When you also consider how much time has gone by since the last release, it made us think this would be even more likely to happen.

It will be interesting to see when the next set of drivers come out; are ATI going to carry through later in the month releases this year or are they going to try and get something out a bit quicker in February and move back to an early / mid-month release?

While price drops on the HD 4800 series cards are no doubt a good thing, if people are looking for top performance they're going to be looking at the NVIDIA offerings. Hopefully the 9.2s give us something to get a bit more excited about.
