Is the volume on your Windows 11 PC so low that it's hard to hear anything? While the media file itself may have been recorded or mastered at a low volume, the issue could also be caused by low system or app volume, audio service problems, driver issues, audio enhancements, and more. Here's how to identify the cause and fix the problem.

Check System, Speaker, and Media-Player Volume

Your PC has multiple separate volume controls - such as the system volume, the app you're using, and the physical controls on your speakers or headphones. If the volume is set low at any point in that chain, the overall audio output will sound quiet. So, raise the volume using the controls on your speakers or headphones, such as the volume buttons/knob or inline controls.

Next, click the speaker icon on the taskbar and raise the main system volume slider. Then right-click the Start button, open the "Settings" app, and go to System > Sound > Volume Mixer. Check the volume levels for your browser, media player, or any app where the sound seems too low. Once you've confirmed that none of the volume levels are set too low, go to the next fix.

Also, check whether your speakers or headphones are properly connected and cables are firmly plugged in, as a loose connection can cause this issue. After confirming that your volume isn't set too low anywhere, check whether the media file itself has low audio levels. If other files or websites play at normal or higher volume, then the issue likely lies with that specific media file or platform. To confirm further, try playing the same file on another computer. If the volume is still low there, the problem isn't with your PC or speakers. In that case, it's best to use a higher-quality or better-encoded version of the file from a different source.

Confirm the Correct Output Device Is Selected

Sometimes, audio may be routed to the wrong output device, which is set at a lower volume or simply has weaker sound output.
