Is the volume on your Windows 11 PC so low that it's hard to hear anything? While the media file itself may have been recorded or mastered at a low volume, the issue could also be caused by low system or app volume, audio service problems, driver issues, audio enhancements, and more. Here's how to identify the cause and fix the problem.

Check System, Speaker, and Media-Player Volume

Your PC has multiple separate volume controls - such as the system volume, the app you're using, and the physical controls on your speakers or headphones. If the volume is set low at any point in that chain, the overall audio output will sound quiet. So, raise the volume using the controls on your speakers or headphones, such as the volume buttons/knob or inline controls.

Next, click the speaker icon on the taskbar and raise the main system volume slider. Then right-click the Start button, open the "Settings" app, and go to System > Sound > Volume Mixer. Check the volume levels for your browser, media player, or any app where the sound seems too low. Once you've confirmed that none of the volume levels are set too low, go to the next fix.

Also, check whether your speakers or headphones are properly connected and cables are firmly plugged in, as a loose connection can cause this issue. If you're using a Bluetooth device, make sure it is properly paired and not muted or disconnected. If needed, disconnect and reconnect it to reset the connection.

Check Whether the Media File Itself Is Quiet

After confirming that your volume isn't set too low anywhere, check whether the media file itself has low audio levels. If it was recorded with low microphone gain, exported at low volume, or heavily compressed during editing or conversion, the sound will naturally be quieter. To verify this, play a different video, song, or game, and test media from multiple sources or platforms.

If other files or websites play at normal or higher volume, then the issue likely lies with that specific media file or platform. To confirm further, try playing the same file on another computer. If the volume is still low there, the problem isn't with your PC or speakers. In that case, it's best to use a higher-quality or better-encoded version of the file from a different source.

Confirm the Correct Output Device Is Selected

Sometimes, audio may be routed to the wrong output device, which is set at a lower volume or simply has weaker sound output. So, if you're using multiple audio devices such as speakers, headphones, or your laptop's built-in speakers, it's important to ensure the correct device is selected as the default output.

To verify this, right-click the Start button and open the "Settings" app. Then go to the "System" tab on the left and select "Sound" on the right. Under the "Output" section, choose the correct audio device under "Choose where to play sound." Make sure that HDMI, monitor speakers, or any low-volume or unintended output device is not selected.

Turn Off Audio Enhancements and Spatial Sound

Windows 11 includes built-in audio enhancements designed to improve sound quality, but in some cases, they can actually reduce volume, distort audio, or make the sound worse. To rule this out, you should turn off these enhancements. Go to the "Settings" app, then navigate to System > Sound. Select your active output device and scroll down to the advanced settings.

There, open the "Audio Enhancements" dropdown and set it to "Off." This will turn off audio processing effects that can sometimes interfere with audio output or make it sound quieter than expected. Similarly, spatial sound is meant for 3D audio effects, but it can also make regular audio seem quieter, so open the "Spatial Sound" menu and turn it "Off" as well.

Adjust Communications Settings

Windows 11 includes a built-in feature that automatically lowers system volume when it detects communication activity, such as calls or voice chats. Because of this, apps like Zoom can sometimes cause sudden volume drops, or the audio may remain low even after the call ends. To fix this, you should adjust the communication settings.

Go to Settings > System > Sound > More Sound Settings. In the window that opens, switch to the "Communications" tab and select "Do Nothing." Then click "Apply" and press "OK."

Restart Windows Audio Services

If your volume still seems low, the problem may be related to Windows audio services, which handle how sound is processed and delivered. When these services stop working, you may notice low volume, distorted audio, or no sound in apps. To fix this, press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Then find "Windows Audio" and "Windows Audio Endpoint Builder."

Right-click each service and select "Restart." After that, double-click each one to open its properties. In the Startup Type dropdown, set it to "Automatic," then click "Apply" and "OK."

Update or Reinstall Sound Drivers

Audio drivers control how your system communicates with speakers, headphones, and other audio devices. If they become outdated or corrupted, you may experience low-volume issues. To update the audio driver, open Device Manager, expand "Sound, Video and Game Controllers," right-click your audio device, and select "Update Driver."

If that doesn't help, right-click the same audio device and select "Uninstall Device." Then download the latest drivers from your manufacturer's website and install them manually.

Run the Audio Troubleshooter

If none of the previous fixes resolve the low-volume issue, try running Windows 11's built-in Audio Troubleshooter, which can automatically detect and fix common sound problems. To run it, open the Get Help app, type Troubleshoot Audio Issues, and select the relevant result.

Then follow the on-screen instructions as Windows diagnoses and attempts to fix the problem. If the issue is software-related, the troubleshooter should help identify and resolve it.

The fixes above should help you identify the cause of the problem and restore normal volume levels. If none of them work and you still experience low volume across the entire system - even with different speakers or headphones - the issue may be hardware-related, such as a faulty sound card or onboard audio chip.

In that case, make sure the sound card is properly seated in its PCIe slot, and have the system inspected to check whether the audio chip or ports are defective.
