TL;DR: Rocket League will transition from Unreal Engine 3 directly to Unreal Engine 6, promising improved graphics, smoother gameplay, and real-time hotfixes. The new engine, expected around 2028, marks a major upgrade but leaves questions about physics changes and whether it will be an update or a separate game.

During Championship Sunday at the RLCS Paris Major, Epic Games and Psyonix took the stage and dropped what might be the biggest Rocket League announcement in the game's history: it is making the jump to Unreal Engine 6. The announcement landed just before the semifinal clash between Team Vitality and Karmine Corp, and the crowd inside Paris' La Défense Arena absolutely lost it.

What made it even more surprising was the engine that they chose. For years, fans and pros alike had been anticipating a move to Unreal Engine 5, so when UE6 was announced as the destination instead, it genuinely caught people off guard, including players who were right there on-site at the event.

A trailer came with the announcement, giving fans a look at in-game footage running on the new engine, though no release date was shown. From what people saw, the visuals are borderline photorealistic, which is a pretty wild thing to say about a game that still runs on decade-old technology.

This is also a historic moment for Rocket League as a whole. The game has been running on Unreal Engine 3 since it launched in 2015, and that aging foundation has clearly limited what Psyonix could realistically deliver in terms of updates and modern features over the years. By skipping UE5 entirely and going straight to 6, Psyonix seems to be betting on the long game.

So what exactly is Unreal Engine 6? It promises enhanced graphics, smoother gameplay, higher tick-rates, and real-time hotfix support, among other things. The catch is that the engine is not expected to be ready until around 2028, so Rocket League fans should probably temper their expectations on a quick turnaround. Moreover, it is not yet known how a move to Unreal Engine 6 will change the game's physics, an aspect that is crucial to Rocket League.

One big thing we still do not know is whether this UE6 version will ship as an update to the existing game or as a fully separate Rocket League 2. Epic and Psyonix have not said a word about that yet but for now, the conversation around Rocket League has not been this loud in a very long time.
