Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up

As Razer's flagship wireless gaming mouse built for esports competition and fans of competitive titles like Counter-Strike 2, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals, and even Arc Raiders, the Viper Pro series has always strived to deliver high-performance in an ultra-lightweight build. The Razer Viper V4 Pro is the latest iteration of its esports-focused wireless gaming mouse, and it improves on its predecessor - the still impressive Razer Viper V3 Pro - in pretty much every notable metric. And yes, it's even lighter, with this ultra-lightweight mouse now weighing only 50 grams.

From the improved optical sensor, the same one that debuted with the impressive Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro, to the inclusion of next-gen optical switches, from a hardware perspective alone, the Razer Viper V4 Pro is a step up. Wrapped in a similarly shaped shell and as symmetrical as the V3, it might look just about identical, but it's pretty impressive how very different everything feels. For the better, too, with even something as overlooked as the scroll wheel, which is now optical, feeling a little smoother while also being basically silent compared to the V3's scroll wheel.

Of course, hardware improvements are to be expected with a new version. Still, the Razer Viper V4 Pro also benefits from software improvements designed to take advantage of its high-end optical sensors. One of these, available for the Razer Viper V4 Pro and other Razer mice, is Dynamic Sensitivity. This feature takes the concept of Windows mouse acceleration (something most gamers disable) and redesigns it for PC gaming.

Razer Viper V4 Pro Wireless Gaming Mouse Review - Built for Competition 9

Dynamic Sensitivity, as the name suggests, is all about customizing acceleration and sensitivity settings to suit your preferred play style. For example, the 'Jump' preset uses a lower sensitivity for slow movement while shifting to a higher sensitivity for quick flicks. For a competitive shooter, this means the ability to aim with slow, measured movements and then still be able to do a quick 180-degree flick turn once you take the shot - or are spotted. This software feature, alongside angle snapping and Razer Hypershift for secondary functions, helps add value to the Razer Viper V4 Pro as a wireless mouse built for PC gaming.

Design, Sensor, & Software

Design

The symmetrical "neutral" gaming mouse is a go-to for most competitive gamers because it supports claw and fingertip grips, with ergonomics often taking a back seat to performance. The Razer Viper V4 Pro is another symmetrical, esports-focused wireless gaming mouse, albeit with a distinct shape and a larger overall size than its direct competitors. The 127.1 x 63.9 x 39.9mm size is impressive for a mouse that weighs only 50 grams, especially when you consider that reducing overall size is one way many ultra-lightweight gaming mice shed a few grams.

However, once you factor in the size of the mouse, with its curved left- and right-click buttons and sides, the Razer Viper V4 Pro is one of the most comfortable symmetrical esports gaming mice currently available, especially if you put on the optional grip tape for added comfort. Unfortunately, as with other Razer mice, the White variant includes black grip tape, which dramatically alters the aesthetics.

The Razer Viper V4 Pro shares a few more physical design similarities with its predecessor, in that the dedicated DPI switch is located on the underside of the mouse, where you'll also find large 100% PTFE feet for an improved glide on a wide range of surfaces. As a wireless mouse that supports 8,000 Hz polling (0.125ms) across both wired and wireless modes, the latter is delivered via Razer's new HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 technology, which features a new puck-like dongle with three LED indicators that showcase signal quality, battery level, and current polling rate mode. This updated wireless interface is what enables the Razer Viper V4 Pro to reduce latency.

Plus, improved battery life, with the V4 Pro offering up to 180 hours at 1,00 Hz polling and up to 45 hours at 8,000 Hz between charges. Yes, 8K polling does significantly drain battery life, but the 45 hours here is notably higher than the 20 hours or so you find on most wireless gaming mice that offer 8K polling. One of the cool features of Razer's Synapse customization software is that you can configure it to automatically switch the polling rate to 8,000 Hz for full-screen gaming and back to 1,000 Hz when you exit.

Rounding out the physical design (the Focus Pro 50K Optical Sensor Gen-3 gets its own section below) are the acoustics and hardware that power the left- and right-click buttons and the scroll wheel. With a distinct, snappy, and relatively loud sound accompanying the left and right click buttons, which are powered by Razer's newer Optical Mouse Switches Gen-4, the click-feel and responsiveness here is satisfying, with a notably lighter touch (actuation force) than the V3 Pro. The optical scroll wheel, with its step-based scrolling, also features improved acoustics with greater reliability, thanks to going the optical route.

Sensor

In some sense, it does feel like the optical sensors we've seen in high-end premium mice in recent years have plateaued, meaning that adding more numbers to things has led to diminishing returns. Case in point, the Focus Pro 50K Optical Sensor Gen-3 that powers the new Razer Viper V4 Pro is notably more capable than the Focus Pro 35K Optical Sensor Gen-2 found in 2024's Razer Viper V3 Pro. Here you've got an overall sensitivity rating of 50,000 DPI compared to 35,000 DPI, a tracking speed of 930 IPS compared to 750 IPS, and a max acceleration of 90G compared to 70G. Yes, it's more capable and arguably the most impressive gaming mouse sensor to date; however, most gamers might not notice the difference.

Razer Viper V4 Pro Wireless Gaming Mouse Review - Built for Competition 10

Of course, this isn't to say that Razer shouldn't keep improving and iterating on its sensor technology, as the Focus Pro 50K is remarkably versatile and fantastic for gaming. It not only accurately tracks on a wide range of surfaces with 1 DPI step adjustments to fine-tune the feel, but also supports angle snapping and asymmetrical adjustable lift-off and landing distances. Perhaps the most impressive update beyond expanding DPI sensitivity is the addition of Frame Sync technology. This is all about supporting true 8,000 Hz polling by synchronizing sensor frames with polling and scanning to improve motion latency and power efficiency.

Software

Unlike some competitors, which are shifting to web-based customization for peripherals, all tinkering and tweaking here is handled via Razer's Synapse software. The good news is that Synapse has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, and it's now faster, more responsive, and uses fewer system resources. The minimal and clean black, grey, and bright green interface hasn't changed all that much over the years, but when it comes to the Razer Viper V4 Pro, it's all straightforward to follow. The main 'Customize' tab is where you can remap button configurations and set up Hypershift to expand the button count from 6 to 11, via secondary functions.

Remapping is simple: select the button, then choose from a range of categorized options covering everything from system functions to macros, and even fire up Razer's AI tools. This main section is also where you can adjust the default LED configuration and layout on the dongle, with an additional option for DPI sensitivity. The 'Performance' section is where you can customize sensitivity settings, including the number of steps and separate X/Y-axis sensitivity settings for a particular profile. Here, you can also adjust the polling rate and enable the 'Smart Polling Rate Switcher' that can be used to enable 2,000, 4,000, or 8,000 Hz polling when playing games.

With additional options for power-saving features and lift-off distance adjustments, the final big Razer Viper V4 Pro customization tool is found in the 'Advanced' section. Here, you've got direct control over creating a custom acceleration curve or choosing from one of the included presets. By default, Dynamic Sensitivity is turned off, but it's a great addition for those with play styles that include slow and fast movements. The 'Advanced' section is where you'll also find the Rotation settings, i.e., angle-snapping for competitive gamers who hold their mouse at an angle.

Gaming and Productivity Performance

Gaming Performance

When it comes to playing games with a high-end gaming mouse like the Razer Viper V4 Pro, even though the Focus Pro 50K Optical Sensor can accurately track on a wide range of surfaces, it's best to pair it with a high-quality mouse mat to ensure you're getting the most accurate and consistent performance. When testing mice, we generally use a dedicated quality mouse mat for all evaluations, and that's the case for the Viper V4 Pro. However, as this mouse is also launching alongside Razer's new Gigantus V2 Pro mouse mat lineup, Razer supplied Balanced and Control (higher-friction) versions of its mouse mat to showcase the versatility and precision of the Razer Viper V4 Pro's sensor and overall performance.

Razer Viper V4 Pro Wireless Gaming Mouse Review - Built for Competition 13

Higher-friction mouse mats require more force due to increased resistance, and we immediately felt this difference when playing titles like Overwatch, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Arc Legends with the Gigantus V2 Pro 'Control' variant compared to the 'Balance' option. It makes sense to pair a premium mouse like the Razer Viper V4 Pro with a mouse mat like the Gigantus V2 Pro, as otherwise you might not be getting the most out of the device. Although this review is focused squarely on the performance of the Razer Viper V4 Pro in our standard review setup, it was good to get a taste of it on different surfaces.

As for the Razer Viper V4 Pro's gaming performance, we mostly played with 8,000 Hz polling with and without Dynamic Sensitivity. From the smooth and comfortable grip to the snappy clicks and responsive scroll wheel, it's safe to say that gaming performance here is virtually flawless. There's no discernible difference between wired or wireless (the latter actually feels a little more responsive), and no matter if it's shooting in Overwatch or picking up loot in Diablo 4, the ultra-lightweight build and high-end sensor combo is a winner.

Productivity Performance

The Razer Viper V4 Pro is the sort of mouse you'd want to pair with a dedicated, stationary rig, as the dongle, although compact, is heavier than the mouse and requires a dongle, as there's no Bluetooth support. Although Bluetooth isn't essential for productivity, it is important for the kind of mouse you'd pair with multiple devices or take on the go. Aside from this, the Razer Viper V4 Pro's sensor and hardware make it a fantastic mouse for all tasks, and its long-lasting battery will last you for weeks in the standard 1,000 Hz polling mode. However, if you're looking for comfort, the ergonomic right-hand design of the Razer DeathAdder V4 Pro might be the better choice.

Final Thoughts

There's definite competition in the wireless gaming mouse space, especially when it comes to models built for, well, competition. That is, esports and those who spend their gaming time jumping into Call of Duty, Arc Raiders, or any other title that requires quick aiming and a responsive trigger finger. Based on the Viper's history, we expected to find a solid follow-up to an already solid gaming mouse built for competitive gaming. Instead, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Razer has not only done the expected thing of building a new sensor but has also refined just about every aspect, from the switches to the scroll wheel to the software.

Razer Viper V4 Pro Wireless Gaming Mouse Review - Built for Competition 12

Although it's a premium option, given the features and hardware it packs, the Razer Viper V4 Pro is reasonably priced compared to the competition, and it offers enough differences - from the overall shape to the feel of the clicks- to stand out. When it comes to criticisms, the only real drawbacks that stand out after several hours of testing and playing are that the overall acoustics of the clicks can come across a little too loud, and the lack of Bluetooth means that it's not as versatile as some. However, when it comes to performance, it's hard to beat.
